How I deal with a "blank page" when worldbuilding

The best way to overcome a blank page is to make the first mark - it doesn't have to have meaning, it's just a starting point!

If you're anything like me, sometimes you'll be like "right, I want to do some worldbuilding!", open up a new document, and just... blank. No idea. Nothing comes to mind. Where do I even start?

I've faced this hurdle time and time again since the start of my worldbuilding journey in 2015, and I'd like to share with you the different ways I've found to overcome the dreaded blank page of doom! 😱

🎽 Creative warm ups

When I'm really stuck for ideas, I warm up with some creative exercises that aren't even attached to my world. I open up a new note and write about a thing that currently interests me - then I put a spin on it for my world's genre (fantasy) which helps me to get in the mindset of worldbuilding and exploring crazy "what if" ideas.

I often use the The Story Engine's Lore Master's Deck for this and connect a few ideas together. If they don't fit my world - that's fine, but if they do I can continue adapting them!

🕸️ Find connections between newest and oldest ideas

As my worlds develop and grow bigger, I often need a reminder of what's already established. I find that looking at my newest bits of lore and then my oldest articles re-ignites where my thought process was and helps me to find more connections between these concepts.

⌛ Fill gaps in my world's timeline

I keep all of the events in my world's history in my free Google Sheets timeline template and I use it to find big gaps of time where nothing has been recorded yet. I'll take a look at the stats tab and see what types of events are missing and see what aspects of history I can add to my worldbuilding.

If you want to grab a copy, the template is here:

🗺️ Look at maps in my world for clues

I really enjoy making maps for my worlds and they're one of the most useful tools for overcoming a blank page. When I'm stuck for ideas I open up my map and start looking at points of interest there to write about and, if those are covered, what's in between them? What stories could take place when travelling from here to there?

📝 Pick a writing prompt

Sometimes, I just want someone to ask questions about my world. For this I go to /r/worldbuilding and look at the questions people post, or I'll pick and choose from the list of 400 worldbuilding prompts I've made 😁

I really like seeing the progress bars fill up as I complete them and it's a fun motivation as I add them to my world!
